OSIHII ART OISHII DESIGN showcases 100 Japanese food and beverage products in celebration of the functionality, creativity, appearance, materials, and form selected by Japan’s Topawards Asia since 2016. Designs are gathered from the consumers’ perspective to introduce works that usually don’t get recognised. Designs are judged in terms of their structure and usage, innovative ‘WOW’ factor; how they evoke emotions, tell stories, engage and interact with consumers.
From pursuing an admixture of local and foreign culture to philosophical nothingness, Japanese food and beverage design seems capable of interpreting tradition with modern creativity seamlessly. This aesthetic precision appeals to our sense, provides visual cues and ease of mid for first-item consumers where, to the delight of our taste buds, will discover the flavour and texture is just as pleasurable.
After WWII in 1945, Japan’s manufacturing industry underwent an instrumental makeover and packaging design play a critical role. Since the 80s, ‘Made in Japan’ has become synonymous to ridges testing of natural and synthetic materials, state-of-the-art print - making techniques, product innovation and quality standard. Thus allowing designers to perform forward thinking experimentation and create emotional food experiences.
Japanese packaging may come in the form to induce a heartfelt response of ‘kawaii’; suggest playfulness or embody deep cultural roots. All of which hope to slowly shape the way we look at objects and contribute to the narrative of internationally acclaimed Japanese designs.
